Man charged in killing of Salim Khamo

A 53-year-old man was charged with murder in the killing of Salim Khamo, a 66-year-old Assyrian refugee from Iraq, according to reports.

Sean Dunnavant is charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 17 shooting death of Khamo, multiple local outlets reported based on a Friday court hearing. He is also charged with attempted armed robbery, according to reports.

Khamo was working behind the counter at his own J&K Food and Liquor in Chicago’s West Ridge Neighborhood when Dunnavant fatally shot him. Khamo was rushed to St. Francis hospital that evening, where he was later pronounced dead.

Dunnavant is a veteran of the Gulf War in Iraq, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Khamo’s family told The Word he is remembered as a beloved grandfather and joy to those who knew him.
