Illinois school district approves first accredited Assyrian language class in US
A school district in Illinois has become the first public high school district in the US to offer Assyrian as an accredited language.
After an historic vote, the Niles Township High School District 219 has become the first in the nation to offer an Assyrian language and culture course that meets graduation requirements.
The board voted unanimously in favor of the course.
The milestone decision is the result of more than seven years of efforts by Assyrians in the community.
